Как читать чертеж и техническое задание на гидравлический цилиндр
Read hydraulic cylinder drawings and specification sheets by checking revisions, stroke, mounting dimensions, ports, ratings, options, and unresolved details.
Read a hydraulic cylinder drawing by establishing its identity, units, viewing direction, and reference dimensions before interpreting individual callouts. Then compare the drawing with the specification sheet and complete model code. Stroke, mounting length, port position, and operating limits must describe the same cylinder configuration.
A familiar-looking outline can hide an important difference. A revised rod end, optional port, sensor, or mounting accessory may change fit or function without changing the headline bore and stroke. This guide provides a reading sequence, two simple dimension examples, and a review register for recording questions. It supports document review by purchasers, maintenance teams, and engineers; final suitability and production release remain with the responsible technical authority.

Confirm the identity and status of every document
Begin with the title block and document header. Record the drawing number, revision, date, units, sheet count, cylinder model or assembly number, and document status. Determine whether it is a catalog illustration, quotation outline, approval drawing, installation drawing, or manufacturing document. These serve different purposes.
Match the complete ordering code to the specification sheet. A shared product-family name is insufficient when codes also select rod diameter, mounting, seals, ports, cushioning, or sensors. Check attachments and continuation sheets; a note on the final sheet may define a condition that is absent from the main view.
Parker's configurator provides model codes and CAD drawings with movement information. Those are useful configuration resources, but a downloaded model still needs identification and review within the project's document-control process. Parker configurator information.
Create a document index before extracting dimensions. It should identify the file actually reviewed, not merely a folder containing several revisions. If the supplier changes a drawing during clarification, retain the earlier review record and link the resolution to the new revision. The cylinder specification and RFQ checklist provides the companion information-gathering framework.

Read the views, units, and reference features
Locate the main view, end views, sections, and detail views. Confirm the projection convention from the drawing rather than guessing which end a view represents. A port shown on the right of an end view can occupy a different apparent position when viewed from the opposite end.
Read the units statement and any exceptions. A metric outline may still identify a port by an inch-based thread designation. Thread names, nominal sizes, and measured diameters are not interchangeable entries. Do not apply the drawing scale to a screenshot to invent a missing dimension.
Follow dimension extension lines to their actual reference features. A length may run between mounting faces, pin centers, shoulders, or body ends. Similar-looking arrows can describe very different installation requirements. Use hydraulic cylinder terminology to keep the names of those features consistent.
Check the general tolerance note and any specific tolerance attached to a feature. A reference dimension or a dimension derived from others should not be treated as an independent acceptance requirement without confirming the drawing convention. Where geometric tolerances or datum systems control alignment, ask the responsible engineer to interpret their effect on the mating assembly.
Separate stroke from installed and overall length
Stroke is the intended piston travel between defined endpoints. It is not the cylinder's overall body length, and it is not automatically the distance between the machine's mounting points. The relevant installation dimension depends on how the cylinder attaches to the machine.
Consider an invented example in which the approved drawing explicitly defines a retracted pin-center distance of 420 mm and a stroke of 250 mm. For the same two pin centers and the stated fully extended position:
Extended pin-center distance = 420 + 250 = 670 mm.
This arithmetic assumes the stated travel changes that dimension directly. It says nothing about the space occupied by fittings, the thickness of brackets, or clearance needed around a moving load.
Catalog dimensions sometimes include a “plus stroke” instruction. Suppose an unrelated illustrative table gives a base dimension B of 180 mm and labels the required length B + S. With S = 250 mm, that indicated dimension is 430 mm. Do not then add the stroke again unless a separate, clearly defined extended-position dimension requires it.
Bosch Rexroth's dimensioning support distinguishes stroke from installation dimension and treats mounting arrangements separately. Its symbols belong to that documentation, not to every supplier's drawing. Rexroth dimensioning support.
For selection, confirm that the machine's required motion and the cylinder's usable travel agree. Review endpoint clearance and any external stop or adjustment with the designer. More detailed selection questions belong in hydraulic cylinder sizing.

Check mounting and rod-end interfaces
Read the mounting arrangement as a connection system. Identify pin diameters, bearing or clevis widths, flange thickness, bolt patterns, locating features, thread forms, engagement requirements, and articulation limits where specified. A matching hole diameter alone does not establish that two assemblies fit or carry the same load.
Distinguish the bare cylinder from supplied accessories. An attached rod eye may alter the installation length and introduce its own load limits. If an accessory is supplied separately, the drawing and bill of materials should make that boundary clear. Rexroth's support notes specifically call for checking externally supplied swivel-head ratings for the use case. Accessory considerations.
| Interface | Read from the documents | Question if missing |
|---|---|---|
| Rod connection | Thread, shoulder, accessory and assembled position | What establishes the final installed length? |
| Pivot mounting | Pin, width, bearing and articulation details | Is the mating bracket compatible? |
| Flange or foot | Hole pattern, locating faces and relevant tolerances | Which feature establishes alignment? |
| Attachment envelope | Fittings, sensors and moving clearances | Is space available through the full motion? |
The reviewer should identify the load path, while the responsible engineer checks strength, alignment, and buckling where relevant. A dimensionally compatible replacement can still require a different application assessment.
Decode ports and their orientation
For every connection, identify its function, thread standard or flange specification, size, sealing method, location, and viewing convention. Note whether the callout describes a working port, drain, bleed feature, or sensor connection. Do not connect components based on a visually similar thread.
Port position numbers are meaningful only with the supplier's orientation diagram. Record the direction of view in the review note. If the drawing shows only one end, obtain clarification for the other rather than assuming symmetry.
The Parker HMI catalog shows that port options and mounting arrangements can affect locations and some dimensions. This supports checking the actual configured drawing instead of applying one catalog outline to every option. The catalog's numeric operating guidance is series-specific and is not used here as a general limit. HMI port and location information.
Check access as well as position. A correctly located connection can still clash with a bracket or leave inadequate room for assembly and inspection. Review the installed fitting and hose envelope, including motion, with the equipment designer. Port size alone does not prove suitable flow performance; see pump, valve, and cylinder matching.

Cross-check the specification sheet against the drawing
The specification sheet describes required performance and service conditions; the drawing primarily communicates geometry and configuration. Neither should be used to fill unknown fields in the other by assumption. Some required information may be incorporated by a referenced document.
| Specification field | Cross-check | Common mistaken inference |
|---|---|---|
| Bore and rod diameter | Correct model-code selection and applicable section or data | Estimating internal bore from external tube size |
| Инсульт | Drawing definition, endpoints and tolerance | Treating overall length as travel |
| Давление | Rating definition, chamber and operating conditions | Using a family maximum as every configuration's rating |
| Fluid and temperature | Seal selection, materials and referenced limits | Assuming the visible outline identifies the seal compound |
| Speed and duty | Required cycle, load and thermal conditions | Treating a static outline as proof of dynamic suitability |
| Options | Code, notes and supplied parts | Assuming pictured accessories are included |
Working pressure, rated pressure, test pressure, and transient conditions are different pieces of information. Confirm how the manufacturer defines each relevant term. A proof-test statement does not authorize continuous operation at that test pressure.
Likewise, cylinder force is not directly established by a catalog headline alone. It depends on effective area and actual chamber pressures, with mechanical effects considered for the application. Use cylinder bore calculations for the calculation boundary.
Record absent information as “not stated” and assign a question. This is more useful than placing an unverified value into a finished-looking spreadsheet that later reviewers may mistake for an approved requirement.
Read options, tolerances, and acceptance notes together
Cushioning, position feedback, special coatings, rod extensions, seals, and attached valves can change the selected configuration. Determine whether each item is required, optional, included, or excluded. Confirm that any additional drawing or data sheet is the one referenced by the order.
Check whether the tolerance applies to a part feature, assembled dimension, or operating position. An adjustable rod-end accessory may require an assembly-setting dimension as well as individual component dimensions. The project should state who sets and verifies that position.
Read acceptance notes for the actual required evidence. ISO 10100's public scope concerns cylinder acceptance and function tests; invoking it requires review of the applicable full document and contract requirements. This guide does not infer test multipliers or pass limits from the standard's title. ISO 10100 scope.
Link the required checks to a report or inspection record. The equipment considerations in cylinder test bench applications help distinguish motion, force, leakage, and other assessments. A drawing approval signature and a test report answer different questions, so keep both records when the project requires them.
Work through an illustrative document review
Imagine a replacement-cylinder enquiry with three fictional documents: a specification calling for 250 mm travel, a supplier outline showing 420 mm retracted pin centers, and a CAD file with no visible revision. The outline labels one port position but does not state the viewing direction.
The correct review is not to approve the assembly because the headline bore and stroke look familiar. Extract the known dimensions, calculate the 670 mm extended pin-center distance only under the stated assumptions, and identify the unanswered interface questions.
| Пункт | Available evidence | Review action |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | Specification states 250 mm | Confirm identical stroke definition and tolerance on the drawing |
| Retracted mounting length | Outline states 420 mm between pin centers | Compare with the machine's required mounting geometry |
| CAD identity | Revision not visible | Obtain a file tied to the approved configuration |
| Port direction | Position indicated without a viewing note | Request an explicit view or written orientation definition |
| Ушко для лески | Accessory shown but supply status unclear | Confirm inclusion, assembled length, and applicable rating |
This is an original teaching example, not a report about a real customer or supplier. It intentionally leaves information unresolved. A responsible review records those gaps instead of manufacturing certainty.
The resulting questions can be added to the deviation register in the cylinder specification and RFQ checklist. Each answer should identify the document and revision it changes.

Close questions before releasing the configuration
Give every issue an owner, required response, and disposition. A verbal statement that “the standard version will fit” is insufficient when the disputed item is a specific dimension or option. Request a revised drawing or a written, controlled clarification according to the project's process.
When documents conflict, apply the agreed contractual precedence or obtain an authorized resolution. Do not independently decide that CAD always overrides a drawing, or that the latest email overrides the signed specification.
Recheck changed items and their dependent dimensions. A port revision can affect clearance; an accessory change can affect length; a seal change can affect the permitted fluid or temperature conditions. Close the issue only when the affected documents describe the same final configuration.
The release record should distinguish dimensional review, application suitability, supplier commitment, and manufacturing authorization. The person checking a fit in CAD may not have authority to approve pressure capability or fatigue life. Keep those responsibilities visible.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Can I read bore size from the outside diameter? No reliable general conversion exists. Use the identified configuration and authoritative dimensions.
Is stroke added to every catalog length? Only where the indicated dimension and its definition require it. Check the reference features and cylinder position before calculating.
Does a 3D model replace an approval drawing? It can support motion and clearance checks, but its status, revision, and governing requirements must be controlled within the agreed process.
What if a critical dimension is missing? Mark it as unresolved and obtain written clarification. Do not estimate from a scaled image and present the estimate as an approved manufacturing or installation dimension.
